Two of San Roque's best-known bakery addresses now bake mainly for customers somewhere else. Meanwhile the new places to order coffee and breakfast along upper State Street were built by operators from Carpinteria, from Connecticut by way of New York and Los Angeles, and from a regional sandwich chain. You can bike between the ovens and the counters in a few minutes, but in 2026 they mostly belong to different businesses. That split explains most of what has changed on a San Roque morning this year.
Jeannine's at State and Ontare was the first to change. As of July 2025, Siteline reported that the San Roque outpost had become a central baking facility and would not reopen to the public. Preordered bakery goods could still be picked up during limited hours. We found no newer report on its status, so the July 2025 description is the most recent one available.
La Gourmandise is following a similar order of operations a short way down State Street. In April 2026 the Restaurant Guy column on santabarbara.com reported that the bakery was moving into 3524 State Street, the former Madame Lu space. Equipment was going in for wholesale work first, with retail service to follow once permits were complete. The business's website still lists wholesale, breakfast delivery, desserts and catering. As of early October we found no announcement of a retail opening or public hours at the State Street address.
Both bakeries have put production first and street-facing retail second, or set retail aside entirely. The flour, butter and early-morning shifts are still in San Roque. Most of what comes out of those ovens is headed somewhere else.
The places that did open to walk-in customers this year came from out of town.
Brass Bird Coffee & Kitchen, 3102 State Street. The café opened on Tuesday, April 1, 2026, in the building that housed Yanni's Greek Deli for many years. Brass Bird started in Carpinteria. According to Edhat, the State Street menu is close to the original café's, with a few additions. The project took a while. Construction began in April 2024, and early plans called the café "Teddy's on State" before it opened under the Brass Bird name. As late as July 2025, a Siteline roundup still listed Teddy's on State as a 2026 opening for that address. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with weekend brunch from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 6:30, it is open before most places nearby, which makes it easy to fit in before school drop-off.
PopUp Bagels, 3925 State Street, Five Points. The chain began as a pandemic project in Connecticut in 2020, built a following in New York City, and opened its first West Coast shops in San Diego and Los Angeles last November. The Santa Barbara News-Press reported on August 19 that signs were up at the former Blaze Pizza space. A PopUp marketing director told the paper the company was targeting a mid-fall opening. As of October 4 we had found no confirmed opening date and no posted hours, so mid-fall is still only a goal.
Mendocino Farms, 3851 State Street, La Cumbre Plaza. This is not a breakfast stop, but it adds a lunch option on the same stretch of State. The Restaurant Guy reported it open in the former Panera space in early July, with hours of 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
One more change at La Cumbre Plaza. Edhat reported that Islands Fine Burgers & Drinks was scheduled to close on September 27, and an employee confirmed the date to the site. We have not found a report confirming the closure after that date.

Most of the "status" column is somebody's plan, not a confirmed fact. Only two of the six businesses are confirmed to be serving walk-in customers right now.
The other half of a San Roque morning starts at Stevens Park. The City describes the park as running up San Roque Canyon to the Jesusita Trail. That end of the neighborhood is being rebuilt this year too.
A Santa Barbara County Flood Control crew, working with Granite Construction, is removing the San Roque debris basin wall, built in 1964, in the valley between Ontare and San Roque roads. The News-Press reported that a pipe running through the wall had rusted, and a pipe cover installed last year had been damaged. Rather than keep repairing it, the County decided to take the wall out and redesign the basin. The County's CEQA filing, posted July 27, 2026, describes replacing the dam and culvert with a natural streambed. Rock outcrops will push large debris such as tree trunks toward the bank.
"We will still have the full functionality of the basin itself to capture large debris, but we're making it so fish and other aquatic species can come through this system," Seth Shank, the County Flood Control environmental compliance manager, told the News-Press. He described the old wall as "a complete and total barrier." County Public Works has named endangered steelhead trout as one species that will be able to use the creek to reach freshwater spawning habitat.
Like the bakeries, the basin keeps its working role, which is catching debris. The structure that stood in the way of the creek is coming out.
For a Jesusita hike this fall, the most recent published guidance is from the August 21 News-Press report:
The basin work is part of a larger push to get creeks ready before storm season. In the same report, crews were also removing a fallen tree from San Jose Creek under Kellogg Avenue.
Here is what a weekend morning looks like with what is confirmed as of early October. Start at the trailhead across from the reservoir on San Roque Road, which keeps you clear of the basin work. Then come back down for brunch at 3102 State, served 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends. For pastry from the State and Ontare kitchen, the most recent report says to order ahead and pick up during the limited hours. Five Points is the one to watch. When PopUp Bagels posts an opening date for 3925 State Street, it will be the only bagel counter on this list and the third new walk-in food counter on upper State this year, after Brass Bird and Mendocino Farms.
Two things on this list remain open questions as fall goes on: a retail counter at 3524 State Street, and an all-clear for the Stevens Park creek trail entrance.
When a space like the former Yanni's or Madame Lu changes hands, the work inside, like the Brass Bird build-out that began in April 2024, often tells you more than the sign out front about where a block is headed. Caleb Overton has a construction background and follows upper State Street address by address.
